Kat Palmers-Needham

'My predominant interests lie in a strong involvement with colour, in the qualities of paint application and in spaces and forms created on the surface of the canvas.

My work is about the process of creating a painting; my engagement with my materials, the beauty of colour, the layering of mark making and a study into the passage of time through the history of making a painting. Chance occurrences that happen while painting, the traces of lines and marks, the freedom of brushstrokes and the random blurring of paint - all these elements work alongside the considered placement of colour and contribute to the creation of my paintings and the narratives which they thereby create. My aim is to achieve a play of balance, depth and surface texture to create rich and inviting paintings.'

Katherine Palmers-Needham first studied fine art at the College of Higher Education in Bath where she graduated in 1994. She later went on to study at Chelsea College of Art where she was awarded a first class honours degree in 'Theory and Practise in Visual Art' in 2003. She now lives in London and works from her studio in Chelsea.
