Charlotte Cornish

Charlotte Cornish graduated in 1990 and since then has travelled the world in search of inspiration for her work. Generally, both her prints and paintings have a realistic starting point, initially inspired by images collected from travel abroad. In recent years this has included trips to Marrakesh, Cairo and Tunisia.

'The development of the work then becomes an increasingly abstracted process, with shapes and forms moving from a descriptive starting point towards a more symbolic form. Over recent years, my work has become increasingly symbolic, exploring the relationships between colours and forms, and their power to evoke emotional and psychological responses.

The dominant theme of my work is the nature of human experience. Visually creating tensions and harmonies, I try to communicate a sense of what it feels like to be alive. Circles have been a recurring form in my work, with the relationships of the circles and vertical and horizontal 'boundaries', creating a visual parallel to relationships in life; with people, experiences, feelings.'
